I would like to begin by stating that I just turned 21 years of age a couple days ago. That's a big deal! We all know what 21 means... However, I was not feeling the hype this year. Turning 21 just wasn't exciting for me - I didn't want a big gathering with a ton of friends at a bar. Instead, I knew that there was a much simpler way to spend my birthday weekend that would make me quite happy.
My birthday fell on a Friday. The day was pretty typical - starting with a biology lab in the morning and ending with a band rehearsal. I don't know if the night could have been any better. My studio performed on the 5th annual Collage Concert. This is a concert that I look forward to seeing every year, and this year I was fortunate enough to be a part of it. My mom and brother came out for the concert and we were able to grab dinner together before the concert, which we also invited along my boyfriend and one of my best friends. The dinner was great and my family enjoyed the concert. I was really glad they got to witness this concert.
Anyways, I then went home with my family over the weekend. I didn't get home until almost 1am and my sister was sleeping. No worries, though. When I came down from my room the next morning, she was already awake and I somewhat startled her. When she saw me, she attacked me with hugs! (I have never been more aggressively attacked with hugs in my life!) Throughout the weekend, I got to spend some good quality time with the family. On Saturday night, we sat around and played Monopoly Deal together, followed by a game of Euchre. On Sunday morning, I took my little bro out for breakfast and coffee before church. I even had time to go out to lunch with a friend on Saturday and sit in a coffee shop (I'll elaborate on my passion and appreciation of coffee shops some other time).
Whenever I go back home, I am reminded of how close everyone really is. This is apparent in both my family and the community. Hazel Park holds a special place in my heart. It is by no means an ideal place to live - it is not wealthy and it's kind of "rough" there, but there is something about a community that is somewhat small that makes it a close-knit place.
This weekend was something that I needed. I am a college student that holds a busy music-major schedule and strives to find ways to relieve stress. Going home fulfilled just that. I got to see my mom's face light up when she saw me, I got to be a big sister, I got to see a family caring for each other, and I got to do so in a city that is special to me. What more could I have asked for the weekend of my 21st birthday?
